Are Your Problems, the Problem?

Have you ever taught a math lesson and thought that the learners definitely “got it” and then given them practice problems only to discover that they didn’t get it? Or, have you given your learners practice problems in class that they did very well with and then given them an assessment and seen that there were too many incorrect answers. These situations can be challenging and sometimes frustrating. In both cases, perhaps, the practice problems are the problem. In this session, we will identify what makes good and engaging math problems and discuss how to help students make sense of problems and persevere in solving them by being strategic and intentional with the problems we choose.
